THE B HAUTE HOSTING GUIDE

A beautiful table.
A relaxed host.

Start with a few pieces that work together, prepare the little things ahead, and leave room to enjoy your guests. From a casual dinner to a festive gathering, this is your guide to bringing it all together.

IN SEASON · HALLOWEEN & HARVEST

Staying in this Halloween?

Make it a party with a small savory menu, alcohol-free drinks for the littles, a separate grown-up drinks station, a costume contest, and a game or two for teens and families.

Keep the plan simple.

Choose your guest count, a menu you can comfortably manage, and one table palette. Plan one main, a couple of sides, a starter or snack, and a dessert you can prepare or pick up ahead. Ask guests about dietary preferences before you shop.

Before adding anything: count seats, place settings, serving utensils, and glasses. Use what you already own, then fill the gaps. Set sizes describe pieces, not necessarily the number of guests—check each retailer's contents.

Start with the place settings.

White stoneware gives you a versatile base; matte black brings a moodier feel. Choose a silver or warm gold flatware finish, then repeat that finish in your candleholders or small accents.

Dinnerware and flatware are separate sets. Confirm quantities and set contents before ordering.

THREE WAYS TO SET THE MOOD

Choose a table look.

You do not need every piece. Pick the palette that feels like your home and build around one or two focal points.

Warm autumn neutrals.

Ivory · natural texture · black

Pair white dinnerware and silver flatware with a natural runner and black rattan placemats. Add a few paper mache pumpkins or maple stems in your own vase. Keep the centerpiece low enough for conversation.

Black, gold & candlelight.

Matte black · warm gold · ivory

Start with matte black dinnerware and gold flatware. Choose brass holders with ivory tapers, or use a flameless pillar on the sideboard. A decorative wood tray can gather the small accents. Candles, holders, and styling pieces are sold separately.

Green & ivory Christmas.

Spruce green · ivory · brass

Pair white dinnerware with champagne gold flatware and green check napkins. Reindeer placecard holders make seating feel considered; a wood reindeer and flameless tree candle carry the holiday look to the center of the table or sideboard.

Give serving its own space.

Set up glasses, water, drinks, and napkins in one easy-to-reach spot. Put a serving utensil beside each dish and leave a clear landing space for platters. A self-serve drinks station lets guests settle in while you finish the meal.

Champagne glasses are an optional extra; everyday drinking glasses work beautifully too. Choose serving pieces for your actual menu.

The place-setting formula.

At each seat

  • Dinner plate, plus a smaller plate or bowl only if the menu needs it.
  • Fork to the left; knife to the right with its blade facing the plate. Add a spoon if needed.
  • Water glass above the knife, with any additional glass beside it.
  • Napkin on the plate or to the left. Add a placecard for a seated gathering.

Across the table

  • One runner or a few placemats to establish the palette.
  • A low centerpiece, with space for serving dishes and conversation.
  • A little candlelight or warm lighting.
  • One repeated accent—brass, greenery, or natural texture—to tie everything together.

A little prep changes the evening.
